Tire Description

The Potenza RE050 is an Ultra High Performance Summer tire designed to complement the performance of sports cars, sports coupes and sport sedans. While the Potenza RE050 is used as Original Equipment on the supercharged Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG sedan, a Potenza RE050 Scuderia version is used on the 12-cylinder Enzo Ferrari supercar. The Potenza RE050 was developed to provide good traction along with responsive and predictable dry and wet road handling. It is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice. The Potenza RE050 features a high-grip tread compound molded into a directional tread design. A continuous center rib, large tread blocks and stable shoulder elements provide responsive handling, high-speed stability and traction on dry roads, while circumferential and lateral tread grooves are aimed to pump water out from under the tire's footprint to minimize hydroplaning and aid wet traction. The tire's internal structure includes twin steel belts reinforced by spiral-wrapped nylon to stabilize the tread area and enhance handling, high speed capability and ride quality. The fabric cord body and hard rubber sidewall filler helps blend uniform ride quality with steering response and lateral stability.

The directional RE050 is the OEM tire for later model S2000s (the similar RE050A is asymmetric). It has stiff sidewalls and an extremely precise feel. Bumps are sharp, but the rubber itself is soft and the impacts do not seem as harsh as they could be given the firm suspension. It is somewhat difficult to detect tire noise with an S2000, but I have not noticed any degradation during the life of the tires, and there is no apparent cupping as is reported a lot for this tire by OEM customers with other car makes. The rear tires were at the wear bars at 27,000 miles but wore extremely evenly in spite of the rear camber and limited slip differential of this car. The front tires may go to 45,000 miles (S2000 tires cannot be rotated front to back due to the staggered sizes. Since the tires are directional, they can be swapped on the rear wheels if there is a benefit to be gained, but I have not done this). The 140 tread wear rating is conservative and is probably based on expected rear wear for powerful rear drive cars. The tires hold air pressure longer than any other tire we have owned in the past 5 years. Very satisfied with these tires, especially for an OEM tire. Traction is excellent dry and wet, but, based on the tread pattern, it is probably not the best for hydroplaning resistance as it ages.
