Tire Description

The Potenza RE040 is an Ultra High Performance Summer Original Equipment tire designed to complement the performance of sports coupes and sports cars including the Acura NSX, Audi TT, BMW 3-Series, Lexus SC430, Nissan 350Z and Toyota MR2. The Potenza RE040 was developed to provide good traction along with responsive and predictable dry and wet road handling. Like all summer tires, the Potenza RE040 tires are not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice. On the outside, the Potenza RE040 features a high grip tread compound molded into a subtly directional tread design. A continuous center rib and large rectangular tread blocks provide responsive handling, high-speed stability and traction on dry roads, while circumferential and lateral tread grooves are aimed to pump water out from under the tire's footprint to minimize hydroplaning and aid wet traction. Internally, the Potenza RE040 features twin steel belts reinforced by spiral wrapped nylon to stabilize the tread area and enhance handling, high-speed capability and ride quality while minimizing weight. The fabric cord body and hard rubber sidewall filler helps blend uniform ride quality with steering response and lateral stability.

Dry is great, noisy on certain surfaces. Tires tend to follow big grooves in the road, very tough to hold steering wheel straight and not scare anyone besides you on the road. Tires become very hard when treads are really close to wear bars. Sidewall is pretty good. Wet is good, but once the treads get close to wear bars, they don't really cut through water that well anymore. I could have got a few more thousands miles out of them, but worn them early because I tend to overinflate them so that I don't have to fill them often. Very very very light snow, they're ok. Slushy snow, it's hard to move the car. By no means should you drive in the snow! I'm just crazy. Tires seem to handle nails and screws nicely. Overall, great performance tires for the streets, not sure about the track, but they're too hard for daily driving. I need some soft tires now. I got Kumho SPTs, and they're perfect for daily driving and street performance isn't that bad.
